SARAH THOMAS ELECTED TO THE VPELA BOARD
Just last week, VPELA announced that UPco’s very own Sarah Thomas had been appointed as a Director on the VPELA Board! We caught up with Sarah to find out the backstory, her advice to other professionals… and what she’s quietly hoping for during her time serving the Board.

This news TOTALLY took us by surprise! How did it come about?
Well, I put my name down a couple of months ago, just to see what happened. I’m at one of those rare stages in life where my schedule is freeing up a little, and I knew I would have more time to commit to something else. And those that know me know how much I love Planning, so this opportunity felt right for me.
What made you want to be on the VPELA Board, specifically?
Earlier this year, I spoke about planning reforms at a VPELA Masterclass – and I realised how much I love chatting to people and swapping insights that grow our collective wisdom on a topic. I think it’s important to share what you can and support other professionals in the same or similar fields. VPELA has always done a great job of growing and developing its members, so it’s a good fit.
I’ve also seen my colleagues have great experiences with VPELA – from Amanda and Holly becoming the VPELA Revue editors, to Izzy’s tenure as Co-Convenor of YPG before stepping into her current role in the VPELA Conference Committee. They’ve all done such a great job, I’d like to continue the tradition.
How did you react when you heard the news?
I was actually on a long-anticipated trip with my daughter – which included a Disney Cruise! Mark Sheppard (the President of VPELA) called me when I was in New York and, needless to say, I was really excited (even though I had to keep it a secret for a while). All in all, a very magical trip!
So, what’s involved with being a Director on the VPELA Board? Anything you’re particularly excited about?
Each year, there are a series of Board meetings alongside lots of networking and professional events to become involved with. Aside from that, I’m really looking forward to getting to know people in my industry away from the desk. We all cross paths professionally, but I haven’t had much time to speak to people on a personal level over the years.
VPELA also does some advocacy work, and I’m quietly excited for any opportunities related to planning policy changes. For instance, VPELA was on the steering committee for some of the Victorian planning reforms, so something like that would be amazing to be a part of!
Do you have any advice for others looking to expand their horizons by being on a board or committee?
Honestly, just throw your hat in the ring. Give it a go and see what happens!
